Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services :: Private Investigators & Security Guards

    Update: Training And Testing Regulation

The Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005 was proclaimed to enhance public safety and help professionalize Ontario's private security industry. The Act contained many important changes, including training and testing requirements for security guards and private investigators. As has been communicated previously, the basic Training & Testing Regulation will come into effect April 15, 2010.

Beginning April 15, 2010, training entities will be able to upload information about their students’ training status and eligibility to write the ministry test. As per the Training and Testing Regulation, this will require a user account number and password which will be e-mailed to the identified training entities shortly.

Businesses that are permitted to deliver basic training and wish to be identified as a training provider may complete the Training Entity Identification Form. The list of identified training entities is posted on the ministry’s website. Please note, this list is neither a ministry endorsement nor a recommendation of any trainer or training program.

In addition, students registered in a training program under the Training and Testing Regulation must complete a Consent and Release of Liability Form. This allows the training entity, the ministry, and the test delivery provider, Serco DES Inc., to share information about a student’s eligibility to write the test and apply for a licence.

Both forms, as well as additional information regarding the basic Training & Testing Regulation, can be found on the ministry’s website.

Individuals may schedule a testing appointment through Serco Des Inc.’s website at Ontario Security Testing

Please be advised that the ministry has updated its New Licence and Licence Renewal application forms to reflect the new Training & Testing Regulation requirements. These updated forms can also be found on the ministry’s website under the “Licences and Forms” section.

Spoke with Ministry today about writing exam prior to license renewal and failing. Did my license get suspended? NO. As I understand, we are able to write the exam (and pay $60) multiple times before license renewal. If you have not passed by renewal time, then you must take the 5 days training and pass the test before license will be renewed.
