Does anyone have any feedback regarding the Certified in Security Supervision and Management (CSSM) offered by IFPO?
Is this a worthwhile course/cert for security supervisors/managers or simply a wast of money...?
Thanks,
John

It is one of the better Field Level Supervisory/Management courses out there. You have to do the SSMP program first, then the CSSM. The SSMP is a traditional course, in that there is an exam at the end which you must score 70% or better to pass. The CSSM portion consists of 10 questions (for each of the 10 domains of the book) that you must write essays on and substantiate your answers from the text. Yes, some of the subject matter is decidedly American (employment law section), but not enough to matter. Besides, the Supervisory/Management concepts in the text are pretty much universal.
I have also done the CSIS Supervisory course, and really, it doesn't make the grade by comparison to IFPO's SSMP/CSSM. I have heard from CSIS that they are planning to revise their course to be in compliance with the new CGSB 133.1-2008 standard for Security Supervisors. If they do, then that would be worthwhile as well.
It is important to note that both above courses are designed for Field personnel - not for senior managment. If you are looking for an Industry-recognized credential for Security Management (generalist) you should have a look at the CPP credential from ASIS International.
Consulting: If you're not a part of the solution, there's good money to be made in prolonging the problem.
I have taken the CPO program through IFPO and found it to be good value for the money.
Something you probably ask your reports - Have you taken a look at where you want to be next year and in 5? That info can help you decide an education and work path. Also consider how hiring managers will view that line on your resume, many will not have heard of the organization but would recogonize a local college.
Thank you for your responses. I think at this time I will sign up for the SSMP and then take the certification exam. I have various backgrounds in security, physical security, and loss prevention as well as a 2 yr college diploma in security. My current role is that of a security operations supervisor. I run the security and life safety of three properties (in house) for my employer. However whatever property I am working at, I am also providing security on top of supervisor/manager duties and supervising the guards. It keeps me busy but works, and is cost efficient to the company. This system also works for helping me keep in touch with what is going on with my properties and the issues my guards face daily. So it is safe to say my role is that of a working/field supervisor. I also feel the CSSM designation would be a good gateway certification to work towards a CPP designation in the future.
Thanks again,
John

Seeing that you have a diploma and life safety is a role, consider taking a certification in that role. You can check from the WSIB website or IAPA for courses. The joint health & safety committee cert can be had in as little as 3 days for both part 1 and part 2. I have taken that and other half and full day classes from IAPA that are geared towards safety but very useful for security.
When you are ready for CPP, try to hook up with a study group, your local chapter of ASIS would be a starting point for that.
best of luck
