    Default Bad Situation

Well I figure I might as well post my bad situation. I was doing security at a local grocery store. I was there to stop intoxicated persons from entering the store as well as detain shoplifters in the store. I was in full uniform since the store required our presence to be known. A group of young males in their late teens had come into the store and I started following them around due to their actions. After about 10 minutes I asked them to leave for their behaviour and they complied.

20 minutes later I was just standing outside of the store looking over the parking lot when one of the males walked up in front of me at a distance of about 4 feet. I just happened to look over my shoulder wondering where his friends were when I noticed they were behind and flanking me at the same distance of about 4 feet.

The one in front of me started yelling in my face about how I kicked him out and how they were going to show me what I deserve. The two behind me moved in to try and grab my arms and the one in front drew his arm back and started to throw a punch.

I knew right then and there I was screwed and that it was going to get ugly so I did the only thing that came to my mind. I've trained in a few forms of martial arts and I decided that two wailing on me is better than three so I threw out a jab and my knuckles connected right below his nose.

Now I know Security is not supposed to hit people but I truly believed my life to be in danger. The guy in front of me dropped like a sack of potatoes. I'm not a small guy by any means, 6'2 260lbs and I put everything I had behind that one jab. The guys behind me must have been surprised. They rushed over and picked up their friend and the three went off running.

What amazes me is that the guy I hit got up. he was bleeding but he got up and I guess I was slightly disappointed at that. I immediately called my supervisor whom I happen to live with and only lived 4 blocks away and the RCMP were notified as well. Two cars showed up and while one went to take my statement the other along with my supervisor let to try and find the three males.

The female officer told me flat out that I did right. The male officer when he returned said I should have batoned him, to which I informed him we aren't allowed to carry them, too bad was his answer.

The three were never found and two days later I found out that I had cracked a bone in my wrist due to the blow. 10 days later the cast came off and here it is only a couple weeks later.

Good job. Four against one despite your size calls for action. Despite your size 4 against one for the most part is unwinnable. It true usually when one goes down the others kind of think twice.

There are always a number of factors that allow the escalation of force to be prudent and acceptable… having a number of dudes announcing what they are going to do to you is one of them.

It’s always better to be the first one to call and report an incident as well.

Best part is that a very clear message has been sent!

Who told you Security is not supposed to hit anyone? The Crininal Code of Canada gives you the right to Use the Force Necessary to defend yourself.

You got an "Atta boy" award from me, for demonstrating true "intestinal fortitude" (guts). Funny how when you take out or shame the leader the others just follow suite like the cowards they truly are.

1 ego deflated, and a group of thugs realizing that there crew really sucks...

Good work, both on recognizing a threat to the client as well as doing what you HAD to do to go home after your shift. As well as showing some punks that they can't go around bullying society.

When its multiple bad guys against ONE, it's no holds barred, it has to be regardless of size.

Sorry about your wrist Drache, but I bet he was in a lot more pain.

Nice job!! I have had similar situations one of which did not end nice for me. You looked over your shoulder. I did not. It was a learning situation for sure. When I worked in Hamilton I had a guy stand and talk to me while his buddy grabbed my batton out of its holster and wacked me few times then took off. I assume it was becuase I interupted him and his girl makin a cake in the car. I have to admit I walked up just before that climactic moment and tapped on the window. Thus ending the escapade and having the girl friend take off on foot ! Can you say blue balls. And the resault of that I got smoked but I got a plate number at the initial situation which I gave the PC when they came. None the less great job. You went home to your family and you were ok.

Good shot Drache! You did what was necessary. The second the cowards started ganging up on you, they crossed the line. Glad to hear you weren't hurt any worse and I hope the wrist heals fully.

As for the comment "Security is not to hit anyone", I get that a lot from people who never worked as guards. They figure a guard should be happy and content to be little more than a punching bag. They're the same people who get angry and run to the labour board or their union if someone so much as glares at them. I'd say, let them try to do our jobs. It would be more than a bit amusing.

    Hi Drache,

I read the situation you described. Basically S. 25 gives you the necessary legal right to use as much force as necessary. No one will fault you for the defense you took, as 3 on 1 situation is grievous bodily harm, and will allow you to use up to lethal force to defend yourself against these scum bags. You did what you had to, and used only as much force as necessary! Sorry to hear you cracked your wrist bone.
